During the governmental reforms of 1853, the
“Sonno Joi” (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians)
group was prohibited from visiting the Imperial
court. In 1865, a duke was transferred from
Choshu to Dazaifu, and this monument was erected
to commemorate his long stay at the Akama waystation
on the way.
