A young guardsman at Okinoshima made a container
for rice wine from the bamboo of Nakatsumiya
Shrine, for his father. On the way back
he encountered a torrential downpour, and
thought it was punishment for cutting bamboo
at the shrine. When a priest there threw
the container into the sea the storm abated,
and the container itself followed his boat.
The guardsman carried the container home
as a gift from the god, and since then water
put into the container would turn into rice
wine.
